I'm just going to say that I agree that while many are probably just commercial fiction, I agree in advance that romance that romance does not have to be fluff. I t depends on the story setting, and the obstacles the characters face, some maybe in their own heads, never mind family, money, cultural norms, etc. Or being set in a warzone. And as far as place is concerned, Melissa already knows that, although it is far from romance, I love Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch books, and I know that a good part of that is because of the way he weaves the City of Los Angeles into the stories as a character.

What Happens in Amsterdam is such a love letter to the city! Great list!
